With Warner Bros.’ The End of Oak Street, Paramount’s PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie, Focus Features’ SIX: The Musical Live!, Falling Forward Films’ Nimrods, and Angel Studios’ The Brink of War among the notable theatrical releases opening today, this felt like the perfect time to get this post on the ‘Stack!’

Sidebar, I saw The End of Oak Street on Thursday afternoon at my local Cinépolis theater and thought it was terrific, old-school, and exactly what you would expect from J.J. Abrams, with that whole Lost vibe and dinosaurs run amok. No spoilers from me, so let’s just leave it at this: it’s a very fun, entertaining and offbeat movie, perfect for August, so it all ties in.

Now, onto the show!

For today’s This Day in Box Office History, I pulled the Rentrak data for titles with an August 14 release date, and it turned out to be a pretty interesting mix.

I know my “August is the most punk rock month of the movie year” metaphor may be getting a little shopworn at this point, but I still think it holds true. August often has an edgier, more unpredictable feel, especially in the late-summer part of the release calendar.

Note: This chart includes selected titles in the Rentrak database with an August 14 release date over the years, along with rating, distributor, opening weekend gross, and domestic cume. Because of how the calendar falls, these are mostly Friday openings, with a couple of Wednesday releases in the mix.

A few titles jumped out straight away, including Straight Outta Compton, District 9, Single White Female, The Commitments (featuring the late great Glen Hansard), Can’t Buy Me Love, and No Way Out to name a few.

It is a good reminder that August has produced a wide range of movies, from music-driven stories, comedies, and romances to sci-fi, thrillers, and action titles.

Straight Outta Compton is clearly the biggest opener on the chart, with a $60.2 million opening weekend (the 6th best weekend debut for the month of August) and more than $161 million domestic. District 9 also stands out, opening to $37.4 million and finishing with more than $115 million domestic.

So what does all of this mean?

It means, August is not just about one type of movie or one type of audience. It is also about taking risks in a month that traditionally sits just outside the hottest part of the summer box office season. That said, this August could still turn out to be one of the most notable months of the year at the box office (Thanks Spidey!), and with some very cool movies on the way, including Sony Pictures Releasing’s Insidious: Out of the Further, Ketchup Entertainment’s Coyote vs. Acme, and Ridley Scott’s The Dog Stars among others. But I’ll save a fuller August 2026 overview for another post.

Adding to the music connection, The Beatles taped an appearance for The Ed Sullivan Show on August 14, 1965. I’m a huge Beatles fan so glad this was such an auspicious day for the The Fab Four!

Movie trivia moment: August 10 has some serious classic movie energy, Sunset Boulevard opened on this date in 1950 and Psycho had its Los Angeles premiere in 1960, both on this date. That’s some pretty amazing cinematic synergy!

Post-pandemic perspective

For a little post-pandemic perspective, Summer 2025 finished at $3.655 billion and never really had a shot at $4 billion, while the Barbenheimer summer of 2023 wound up at $4.095 billion, making it the only post-pandemic summer to finish at or above $4 billion until now, with Summer 2026 joining ‘23 in the $4 billion club having crossed that revenue mark on Monday.

The 2019 comparison is also an important one. That summer started on Friday, May 3, and reached $4 billion on Sunday, Aug. 18, day 108 of the season.

Mother, what is the biggest summer season ever?

Well Norman, it happened 13 years ago in 2013, the summer season record-holder with $4.756 billion. That summer started with Iron Man 3 on Friday, May 3, and crossed $4 billion on Friday, Aug. 9, in just 99 DAYS! In case you’re wondering, Iron Man 3 was the top grossing film for that summer, and took in $407.9 million across the comparable 102-day period in the wake of its debut in May of that year.

How close is summer ‘26 to the record summer of ‘13?

Based on the latest Rentrak numbers, Summer 2026 is now just $745 million shy of the full all-time summer record, while also trailing the comparable 2013 date range by $161.4 million, or -3.9%. That is remarkable considering that just a few weeks ago a $4 billion summer for this year was a question mark. Thank you Odyssey & Spider-Man!

The box office pace is an important factor

The current pace is the real story with Summer ‘26 running +21.8% ahead of the comparable 2025 period and +3.2% ahead of the comparable 2019 period, with the marketplace $718 million ahead of last summer at the same point and $122.8 million ahead of 2019.

The Late Summer Surge of Spidey

Of course, Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues to do a lot of heavy lifting, and after just 10 days in theaters is leading all summer titles to date with $671.029 million, representing 16.73% of the overall summer box office across the comparable 102-day date range. It also dominated the weekend with $144.2 million, generating 70.57% of the total weekend box office.

The past weekend, at $204.4 million overall, was up +52.2% versus the same weekend last year and +53% versus the comparable weekend in 2019.

But let’s not forget

Toy Story 5 and The Odyssey also deserve major credit as huge MVPs in the summer sprint to $4 billion. Toy Story 5has brought in about $471.3 million so far this summer, while The Odyssey has delivered $466.6 million, giving the marketplace two more powerhouse contributors behind the season’s surge. YouTube filmmaker horror sensations Obsession & Backrooms and every other film that has played in theaters this summer also deserve credit in reaching this important box office milestone.

One important caveat

Calendar context matters. Summer 2026 includes an additional week, making it a 130-day season versus the typical 123-day summer movie season, so the broader seasonal comparison needs that context baked in.

Still, no matter how you slice it, this is a major moment for the theatrical marketplace.

The $4 billion summer has indeed landed!

Verified via Rentrak data: Horror crossed the $1 billion domestic box office mark on August 1 in 2026, 213 days into the year, making this the fastest-ever sprint to $1 billion for the genre.

By comparison, horror reached $1 billion domestically on September 5 in 2025, 248 days into the year, and on December 2 in 2023, 336 days into the year, so 2026 got there 35 days faster than last year and 123 days faster than 2023.

That puts 2026 in a very different category in terms of speed, while also representing 15.86% of the entire domestic box office year to date.

How We Got Here

The billion-dollar level was somewhat unimaginable for the genre until 2017, when IT was the No. 1 horror movie of the year, Get Out was No. 2, and Annabelle: Creation was No. 3, thus delivering the very first billion-dollar year for horror at the box office.

It would not be until two years later that IT Chapter Two helped drive only the second billion-dollar year for horror at the box office, with Pennywise the Clown clearly being a mean as hell box office generator.

We then had to wait because the pandemic hit and affected everything, depressing the entire theatrical landscape in terms of its box office potential. But the surprise hit Five Nights at Freddy’s in the Barbenheimer year of 2023 helped drive another billion-dollar box office year for horror.

And of course, last year, mega-hit Sinners, along with The Conjuring: Last Rites and Weapons, drove a massive, biggest-ever year for horror with $1.426 billion in domestic box office.

What This Says About Horror Right Now

Now the question is how high can we go in terms of the horror box office this year, since we still have five months to go in the year and Other Mommy is on the way. That one is getting a huge reaction right now, and I saw that firsthand at the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood on the opening weekend of The Odyssey, when they played the trailer and everybody absolutely went crazy for Jessica Chastain and her truly creepy mother character in that film.

As a huge fan of the horror genre, it warms my Edgar Allan Poe-loving, Tell-Tale Heart that so many others around the world love the genre too, particularly as seen in a movie theater, where the collective excitement, screams, and shared sense of fun are infectious. There’s no better place to see a horror movie than in a movie theater, or of course, late at night at home alone.

Paul D. horror movie memory: I’m very much a horror fan, with my first formative experience coming when my older sisters snuck me in to see The Exorcist at age 13. I was both traumatized and fascinated by the experience and thus began my lifelong love of horror movies. Sidebar, I also love those classic British Hammer horror films, with Christopher Lee most famously as Dracula, at the forefront of so many of them, so this is a subject near and dear to my heart.

As I told CNBC, “Notably, there has never been a film released domestically that has ever earned over a billion dollars in North America alone. Only Star Wars: The Force Awakens has even come close, with $936.7 million.”

Here are my additional thoughts on the topic: There was a time when hitting a billion dollars in theatrical box office globally was the equivalent of trying to break the sound barrier back in the days of legendary test pilot Chuck Yeager. But now, with ticket price inflation and, more importantly, the broadening and expansion of the international theatrical marketplace over the past couple of decades, getting to that milestone isn’t quite the heavy lift that it used to be & before international markets like China became pound for pound as important as the North American marketplace.

China is among the top international markets for major global blockbusters, helping along with other key international territories, to turn the movie theater business into a global revenue-generating machine.

Here’s the proof: several films have cleared the billion-dollar mark in the international markets alone, including Avatar, Titanic, Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Jurassic World, The Lion King, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Avatar: The Way of Water & Inside Out 2.

This all brings us back to Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which hit the billion-dollar mark faster than a speeding bullet, in just six days, and currently has just over 61% of its box office coming from outside North America.

In the final analysis, it’s obvious that this is a global business and that the movie theater experience transcends borders and cultures, and collectively, the world generates enough box office-generating horsepower to turn the theatrical marketplace into a revenue-generating machine. Spider-Man: Brand New Day truly brings the point home with its incredible sprint to the billion-dollar mark.

The big question now is how Avengers: Doomsday will stack up in the global box office speed contest when it hits theaters on December 18, and separately, how Dune: Part Three will perform when it arrives on the same day on what could collectively become one of the biggest overall box office weekends in history…. and we could be looking at another two films that will join that billion dollar box office party! We shall see…

This same line could be spoken by theater owners to silence all the naysayers and those who lost faith in the future of movie theaters when the pandemic sidelined the entire industry in Mid-March of 2020.
The fact that the ’26 summer to date is now running just 1% behind the summer of 2019 is remarkable and reflects empirical Rentrak data that demonstrates that movie theater experience is here to stay no matter how many options are available in the entertainment ecosystem.

UPDATED MONDAY Aug. 3 - Check out this Exclusive Rentrak chart - This weekend’s overall total 3-day Domestic box office is at an estimated $435M+ million (up 253% vs. the same weekend a year ago) & YTD 2026 now at $6.201Bn, up 15.3% vs. 2025. The Summer Season is now up 16.6% vs. last year and get this, running just 1% behind the summer of 2019 at $3.578Bn. *Important factor: The Summer of 2026 has an additional week for a 130-day season vs. 123 (123 days is the norm) due to the calendar this year. That's gives the season an even better chance at snagging the prize. The first 2 days of August has already generated $244M. Could this summer rival the biggest summer of all-time? 2013 holds the current record with $4,755,775,084 (123 day season) when Iron Man 3 was the Top Summer Film. We shall see..

This assumes a Friday single-day domestic gross of $192 million that pushed July-to-date over the $1 billion mark on Friday. Note: July 1–30 gross for the date range was $994.618M.

Again, this is an estimate, but this is going to dial in pretty close unless Spider-Man: Brand New Day over-indexes even more. This killer weekend driven by Spidey and The Odyssey, with a minimal third-weekend drop of around 43% assuming a $51M weekend, is going to push the year-to-date advantage to an estimated 15% in a single week, representing a 5% uptick in YTD revenue vs. ’25.

That’s what a $400 million weekend can do for you!

Depending on who you ask, this will either be the biggest or 2nd best overall domestic weekend of all time. Either way, this is a touchstone weekend that will be talked about and studied for years to come. The $400 million benchmark is in play according to our exclusive Rentrak Movies data for the overall domestic weekend, and whether it gets there is really up to Spidey. Spider-Man Sidebar: I’ve been on needles and pins all morning waiting for the official numbers & now that Sony delivered them, I’m now anticipating the official numbers on Sunday morning,

Sony Pictures Entertainment’s official projections show the film delivering a $325 million opening weekend performance for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, but today’s coverage of this monumental summer weekend will amp the FOMO factor even higher, and the numbers could come in much stronger.

But lest we get over our skis, which we are apt to do, we need to come back down to earth and realize that it is not just about the numbers. It is about what has been happening over the past few weeks and throughout the year, with movies capturing the imagination of audiences around the world and proving that the movie theater provides a singular experience that cannot be replicated anywhere else. This summer in particular has been one of the most dynamic and unpredictable in history, and much credit goes to The Odyssey for inspiring a renewed passion for moviegoing, particularly among younger audiences, that helps ensure the future of theatrical exhibition. This weekend, with the expected record-breaking performance of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, plus The Odyssey and a trifecta of family films including Toy Story 5, Minions & Monsters, and Moana, is delivering to audiences an eclectic mix of films that really is unrivaled in any past summer movie season, particularly heading into August, which could be only the third billion-dollar August ever, powered by all these great films. Savor the moment people, because it truly is historic!

For CNBC, Sarah Whitten has web-slinging, up-to-the-minute reporting on the Spider-Man: Brand New Day pre-shows and its prospects for its performance over this epic weekend for movie theaters.

“The demand for ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is nothing short of astonishing,” said Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at Rentrak. “For a film to earn more than $70 million in pre-shows is unprecedented, and it reflects massive enthusiasm among moviegoers to head to the multiplex for the latest Marvel epic.”

“While pre-shows are a very strong indicator of potential opening-weekend success, several factors can come into play, including a heavily front-loaded preview and opening day driven by fans motivated by the shared urgency of opening-weekend FOMO [fear of missing out],” Dergarabedian said.

Dergarabedian said only nine films in box office history have cleared a $200 million-plus domestic debut, not adjusted for inflation, and this would make Spider-Man: Brand New Day the tenth film to reach that milestone. The second-biggest domestic opening of all time, after Disney’s Avengers: Endgame’s $357.1 million opening in April 2019, was Spider-Man: No Way Home, with a $260.1 million debut in December 2021.

“If this weekend’s domestic box office lands in the $350 million-plus range, Spider-Man could represent roughly 71%+ of the entire theatrical marketplace,” Dergarabedian said, making it not only one of the biggest three-day domestic weekends ever, but potentially delivering “a massive year-over-year lift” compared with the same period last year, he added.

For more than three decades, I’ve had the privilege of looking at the theatrical marketplace through the lens of data, trends, release patterns, audience behavior, and box office performance. But more importantly as a kid growing up in the sixties, as a teen in the 70’s (think Dazed and Confused: see picture below), and then into my 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s & beyond, movies and music have always been my passion.

That’s why the idea of a “memory moment” resonates so strongly with me.

That has been true for me for my entire life, and it remains true today. The theatrical experience continues to evolve, but its power is still rooted in something timeless: The communal and immersive act of going to the movies surrounded by a bunch of like-minded strangers in a darkened auditorium with a flickering light on a big screen.

But the year-over-year comparison is where the story really gets interesting: according to our Rentrak data:

· The same weekend last year came in at $123,950,876.

· The Fantastic Four: First Steps contributed $38.7M and took the top spot in its second weekend.

· If this weekend hits $350M, we’re talking about an increase of roughly 185% versus the comparable frame last year.

· Could a 200% same weekend YoY increase be in the cards?

Now, to be clear, these are rough estimates. I’m not holding myself — nor expecting anyone else to hold me to these numbers. Some of you may say I’m being too conservative; others may say I’m being too aggressive with my projections.

But this is the kind of weekend that can materially shift the entire summer box office narrative, lift the summer-to-date comparison versus last year, improve the year-to-date picture, and even make the comparison to the pre-pandemic benchmark year of 2019 even stronger. Buckle up because this is going to be another incredible weekend for movie theaters! Thanks Spidey!

The domestic box office is sitting at $3,074,847,601 through Monday, July 27, according to our exclusive Rentrak data. That puts the industry within striking distance of a summer season north of $4 billion.

The Billion-Dollar August Club Is Very Small

If history tells us anything, getting close to — or over — $1 billion for the month of August is exceedingly rare. In fact, it has only happened twice in box office history.

The first time was 2014, when Guardians of the Galaxy opened on August 1 and helped propel the month to $1.019 billion. Two years later, in 2016, Suicide Squad opened on August 5 and helped drive August to $1.020 billion. Since then, the industry has come close, including 2024, when Deadpool & Wolverine powered August to $908 million.

Could It Happen Again?

That is the billion-dollar question — literally.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters on July 31, giving the last full month of summer exactly the kind of mega-franchise firepower that can change the trajectory of an entire marketplace. With a massive domestic debut expected, the film could be the linchpin that turns August 2026 into only the third billion-dollar August in box office history and it will not be working alone. The expected holdover strength of The Odyssey, Toy Story 5, Minions & Monsters, Moana, and others should keep plenty of fuel in the theatrical tank well into August.

August Still Has Plenty of Heat

Mid-August brings a diverse lineup of new releases, including The End of Oak Street and PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie on August 14. Then comes a particularly intriguing August 28 weekend, with Ridley Scott’s The Dog Stars, Coyote vs. Acme, and others entering the marketplace just ahead of Labor Day.

That timing matters as a strong late-August frame can set up the Labor Day weekend that follows on September 4, giving the summer season a chance to go out with a bang rather than a whimper. (Note: This summer boasts a 130 day frame rather than the typical 123 days due to the Labor Day rule that dictates that it falls on the first Monday in September; this happened in 2020 & 2015. This means we get an extra week of legit summer revenue added into the mix & takes some pressure off August to generate a full $1 billion in domestic revenue.)

The Punk Rock Month of Summer

August has always been a favorite of mine. The month tends to leave room for movies that are edgier and push the envelope. That is why I have always thought of August as the most punk rock month on the movie calendar. Some of my personal favorite films have been released in the month (you’ll see why later in this article).

The Ultimate Question

So here is the question: if Spider-Man: Brand New Day gives August the opening jolt it needs, could the month become the secret weapon that pushes this year’s domestic summer box office past $4 billion? If it does, it will be another reminder that August should never be treated as an afterthought. Sometimes the month at the end of summer is the one that gives the season its edge & its home-stretch firepower.

That does not mean the final stretch will be easy. It does mean the conversation has changed. After years of uneven recovery, shifting consumer habits, and a seemingly endless stream of commentary questioning the long-term viability of the theatrical experience, the box office is once again giving the industry something powerful to talk about: momentum.

The $4 Billion Question

The basic math is simple: the summer is now roughly $1 billion away from $4 billion. The harder question is whether the remaining runway can deliver enough volume to get there.

That is where the next wave of major releases becomes so important. The spotlight now turns to Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which swings into theaters later this week with the potential to deliver the biggest opening weekend of the year thus far with a $200M plus domestic debut. If it performs at the level audiences, exhibitors, and the broader industry are hoping for, the path to $4 billion becomes a much more realistic proposition.

And it is not just one film carrying the conversation. A host of intriguing and exciting August titles are still ahead, giving the marketplace a chance to build on the current momentum rather than simply coast on one headline-grabbing release.

The Odyssey and the Power of the Hold

A huge assist is coming from The Odyssey, which continues to play as one of the defining theatrical stories of the summer. Its second weekend is particularly impressive, with a reported drop of just 30% — the kind of sophomore hold that speaks to real audience enthusiasm, strong word of mouth, and the ongoing appeal of event-level moviegoing.

Christopher Nolan’s latest epic has become more than a box office success story. It has become part of the larger cultural conversation. Theaters are adding showtimes to meet demand, including premium 70mm presentations as well as traditional formats that still deliver the communal, immersive experience audiences clearly want.

No matter the format, the excitement is rooted in the same essential idea: seeing The Odyssey in a movie theater. That is where the film’s scale, craft, and shared impact are fully realized.

A Vindicating Stretch for Theaters

It has been a vindicating stretch for movie theaters, especially after years of naysayers suggesting that the theatrical experience was headed toward extinction. That idea has been proven wrong time and again, and this moment offers another powerful reminder of the unique appeal of the big screen.

The current enthusiasm surrounding The Odyssey, combined with the anticipation for Spider-Man: Brand New Day and the broader summer slate, reinforces something that many in the industry have always understood: moviegoing is not merely a distribution channel. It is an experience.

In a wildly diverse entertainment ecosystem, theatrical has not disappeared. It has adapted, reasserted itself, and reminded audiences why the big screen still matters. Right now, movie theaters are not on the margins of the entertainment conversation. They are helping drive it.

The Movie Gods Have Spoken

I think it’s amazing that the Cinerama Dome in Hollywood is reopening at what feels like the absolute perfect moment.

It really does seem like the planets have aligned in terms of moviegoing and the importance of the movie theater experience. At a time when so much of the conversation around entertainment is about convenience, access, platforms, windows, and screens of every size, the audience is once again reminding everyone of something very simple: there is still nothing like a great movie in an epic movie theater.

And that is why the performance of The Odyssey matters so much. Moviegoers around the world fully understand the singular experience that only theatrical moviegoing can provide. That should not be marginalized. It should be celebrated.

Why This One Is Personal

For me, the Cinerama Dome is not just an iconic theater. It is a childhood icon. It is part of my own moviegoing DNA.

The very first movie that truly impacted me as a kid was 2001: A Space Odyssey, which I saw first-run at the Hollywood Cinerama Dome with my father, my mother, and my three older sisters. That memory has never left me.

My dad was a rocket scientist, so Arthur C. Clarke meant a lot to him and the novel “2001: A Space Odyssey” was in a prime spot on our family bookshelf. Seeing 2001 with him in that theater was not just seeing a movie. It was being introduced to the power of cinema, science, imagination, and scale all at once. It also, at the tender age of seven years old made me appreciate the brilliance of the filmmaking of Stanley Kubrick even though the stargate sequence left me bewildered & hypnotized and the ending completely left my young brain completely baffled.

That is also where I saw Ice Station Zebra as a kid and Apocalypse Now when I was 18, as well as Christopher Nolan’s unforgettable presentation of 2001: A Space Odyssey years later. So, when they say, ‘there is no place like Dome,’ I connect to it literally, emotionally, and historically.

What Nolan Has Reminded Us

What The Odyssey means for the industry, and what Christopher Nolan has done through his storytelling, his commitment to film, and his unwavering belief in the movie theater, is nothing short of historic and transcendent.

I think the movie gods — not just the gods in Homer’s Odyssey — have had a hand in reminding everyone of the undeniable relevance of the movie theater experience.

The fact that the Cinerama Dome’s reopening was announced within the same general moment that The Odyssey is redefining the movie industry and reminding everyone how important the movie theater feels like something that will be talked about, written about, and looked back on for decades to come is cosmic perfection.

This Is a Pivotal Moment

This is a pivotal moment for movie theaters. One that will be remembered, studied and discussed for decades to come. We film fans should be honored to be living in this moment.

All the naysayers who said the movie theater would disappear after the pandemic have been proven wrong time and again. And honestly, history has been telling us this for a very long time.

Every time a new technology came around — whether it was television in the 1950s, the home video revolution in the 1990s, the home theater revolution in the 2000s, or the streaming revolution in the 2010s — movie theaters stood up to every challenge that came their way.

Not a pandemic. Not an actor strike. Not a writer strike. Not the latest wave of disruption. None of it has taken down the movie theater.

The Box Office Is Making the Case

What is happening over the course of this year at the box office should silence all those who lost faith in the movie theater.

With Backrooms, Obsession, Project Hail Mary, Super Mario Galaxy, Michael, The Devil Wears Prada 2, Toy Story 5, The Invite, and now, of course, The Odyssey, to name a few, the theatrical marketplace is showing that audiences around the world will come out when the movies feel essential, communal, exciting, and bigger than life as only the big screen can provide.
